This fall, The Community YMCA proudly marked the 10-year anniversary of Y Achievers at the Y Cares Annual Benefit on Oct. 15 at Stillwell Stables in Colts Neck.

More than 1,000 young people have thrived in the Y Achievers program, which provides at-risk teens in Monmouth County with tools to enter and succeed in college.

“Y Achievers has given me confidence and helped me to be ready for college,” said Bryanna Reevey, a 2014 graduate of the Y Achievers program and a culinary student at Brookdale Community College.

Once a shy teen, Bryanna is now a mentor to student Achievers, encouraging them to stay in high school and to take advantage of the many activities and opportunities available through the program.

From taking SAT preparation courses and exploring college campuses to developing leaderships skills and learning how to apply for college, scholarships and financial aid, students receive a wide array of support to help them transition from high school to college and careers.

Led by Senior Director of Community Outreach Jo Ann Rountree, the program targets teens in underserved communities who are at a high risk for not completing high school.

Participants are predominately African American and Hispanic adolescents, between the ages of 12 to 19 who attend school in Asbury Park, Neptune, Keyport and Red Bank.

The program is almost entirely underwritten by grants and the generous philanthropic support from the Y  community, Rountree said.

“We’re so grateful for the support. It makes it possible for the Y to  nurture the potential of very deserving teens so they can grow into tomorrow’s leaders,” Rountree said.

President and CEO of The Community YMCA Rhonda Anderson said the Y believes that college shouldn’t be a privilege. “We believe it’s a right.”

All 17 seniors who graduated from the Achievers program in June 2016 are attending college this school year, Anderson noted. “I’d say 100% is a pretty good number,” she stated.
